I spent a Sunday afternoon riding a blue dragon through a desert that looks like it was painted in 1995 and polished yesterday. In Panzer Dragoon: Remake in VR, your right hand is the reticle. You’re not steering with a stick — you drag the controller through the air to line up shots while the dragon banks underneath you.

That’s the whole pitch, and it’s a good one. Astien’s community mod takes Forever Entertainment’s faithful up-res of the Saturn original and wires VR controllers straight into the aiming. No virtual Xbox pad, no emulation layer — the mod talks to the dragon through OpenVR and your hands.

What this actually is

This is a community mod, not something the publisher shipped. It’s a BepInEx plugin dropped onto the Unity build, and it requires the PC version from Steam. If you own the game on Switch, PS4, or Xbox, the VR path doesn’t reach you — it lives only on the Windows build. That’s a hard requirement, not a preference.

Getting it running is moderate, not punishing. The PCVR Mods Hub installer will sniff out your Steam install and drop the files in automatically. If you’d rather do it yourself, you download the ZIP and extract it into the game folder. One thing worth knowing: the mod defaults to OpenVR, so if you’re on an OpenXR headset you flip a single config flag (vrApi = OpenXR) and you’re set. Left-handed players get the same one-line edit. Haptic devices — a bHaptics vest or a Provolver gun — need to be powered on before you launch, or the mod won’t see them.

How it plays

The control map is small and it clicks fast. Right trigger fires. Hold the left trigger and you enter targeting mode: you sweep your hand across the screen, the mod locks onto every enemy in your arc, and releasing lets the dragon auto-fire at everything you tagged. Left stick moves the dragon, but only when you’re looking forward; the grips rotate the view left and right; X recenters you. Your hand is the aiming reticle, not a crosshair painted on the HUD.

What surprised me is how much the world opens up once aiming becomes a physical gesture. On a flat screen, Panzer Dragoon is a tight on-rails light-gun game where you watch a crosshair. In the headset, you’re behind the dragon’s shoulders, dragging your hand through the air, and the scale of the creature underneath you reads in a way a monitor never sells. The mod decouples looking from movement — you can crane your head sideways to watch a flyby without the dragon veering off its track — and that single design choice is what keeps it comfortable. You’re not bolted to the camera.

The ride itself

The campaign is barely two hours long, and the mod doesn’t pad that. You fly seven levels, each one a corridor of enemies and the occasional set-piece boss that demands you actually sweep your whole field of view to catch every target before it fires back. The aiming is the game. Everything else — the story, the lore, the ancient lost civilization — is thin by design. The original was a 1995 arcade rail shooter, and the Remake honors that. You don’t play this for narrative. You play it to feel like you’re riding a gun-mounted lizard through painted skies.

Where it earns its keep is the targeting loop. Holding left trigger and painting enemies with your hand, then watching the dragon snap-fire across the whole arc, is the kind of physical payoff that flat versions of this genre never had. The bosses that make you spin and re-center feel like light-gun gallery set pieces rebuilt for your wrists. That’s the transformation: the remake was always a tight arcade game, and motion aiming is exactly the body language it was waiting for.

The caveats

Let’s be honest about the limits. The game is short, and it’s a faithful remake, which means the systems underneath the aiming are shallow. There’s one dragon, one beam, one targeting mode. Enemy variety is thin. After the second playthrough the levels are memorized, and the mod has no new content of its own — it ports the existing campaign into VR, nothing more. If you go in expecting a world to inhabit, you’ll be disappointed; this is a score-attack arcade loop with a headset bolted on, not a living sky to live inside.

Performance is a non-issue. It’s a Unity remake of a Saturn game; a mid-range PC pushes it at 90Hz with headroom to spare. I’d call it efficient, not demanding. I never saw a dropped frame across a full run.

Haptics are the optional cherry. If you’ve got a bHaptics vest and arm rig, or a Provolver/ProTubeVR haptic gun, the mod lights them up — getting tagged by a enemy volley through the vest is a better feedback signal than any rumble. But this is a nice-to-have, not a reason to buy the vest. The game plays identically without it; the haptics just deepen an experience that’s already doing the work through your hands.

Should you bother

If you already own the Steam build and you want a compact, genuinely physical rail shooter to break out on a lazy afternoon, this is an easy yes. The mod is stable, the setup is one config flag away from automatic, and the aiming is the real article. Skip it if you don’t own the PC version — there’s no path from the console builds — or if you need more than two hours of depth. This is a sharp, specific thrill, not a long one.

The best version of Panzer Dragoon has always been the one where you’re holding the gun. The mod finally lets you.

Astien's VR mod turns a short, faithful remake into the dragon-riding rail shooter it always wanted to be — you aim with your hand, not a stick. A two-hour thrill for fans who own the Steam build and want real motion controls without a fight.
